“The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early…”
On Nov. 10, 1975, The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, an iron ore carrier on the Great Lakes, sank suddenly in Lake Superior during a storm, killing all 29 men aboard. The tragic event inspired Gordon Lightfoot to write the song “The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald.”
We find it interesting that some people think Gordon just made up the story. It happened, 42 years ago today.
RIP to all.
