THE BAND played what they advertised as their “farewell concert appearance” On Nov. 25, 1976, Thanksgiving Day. The concert was held at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. It was to be known as “The Last Waltz.” The Band was joined on stage by a few of their friends which included Bob Dylan, Paul Butterfield, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Ronnie Wood, Neil Diamond, Bobby Charles, The Staple Singers, and Eric Clapton.
The event was filmed by director Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary of the same name, released in 1978. The film features concert performances, scenes shot on a studio soundstage and interviews by Scorsese with members of the Band. A triple-LP soundtrack recording was issued in 1978. The film was released on DVD in 2002 as was a four-CD box set of the concert and related studio recordings.
The Last Waltz is hailed as one of the greatest concert films ever made,
One of the greatest, would you agree?
Happy 41st Birthday to “The Last Waltz”!!
