It has now become a Christmas standard. It started out really as a protest song.

On Dec. 1, 1971, the single “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” was released in the US by John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir. It was the seventh single release by John Lennon outside of his work with the Beatles. The song wasn’t released in the UK until the following year where it reached number 4.

It started out as a protest song against the Vietnam War. “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” has since become a Christmas standard, frequently covered by other artists, appearing on compilation albums of seasonal music, and named in polls as a holiday favorite.

It is on your Christmas / Holiday song list?

Happy 46th US Birthday to “Happy Xmas (War is Over)!!
