There are times we post something and we hear from a number of people things like “What does this have to do with Rock and Roll?”

We do it because sometimes it’s about the influences that a person or a record has had on Rock musicians. Here’s an example for today.

Jaco Pastorius would have turned 66 years old today. He is best known for his work with Weather Report from 1976 to 1981, as well as work with artists including Joni Mitchell and his own solo projects.

His playing was known for its highly technical, latin-influenced 16th-note funk, lyrical soloing on fretless bass and innovative use of harmonics. He is said to have redefined the role of the electric bass and is universally recognized as one of the greatest bass players in history. He was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1988, one of only seven bassists so honored (and the only electric bass guitarist).

Jaco passed away on Sept. 27, 1987 after being beaten by a night club bouncer.

Happy Birthday Jaco. You have influenced so many. RIP.

Now, to our bass playing and music loving friends. Do you think we should not mention people like Jaco, because he wasn’t Rock and Roll enough?
