Every now and then we say we wish we had a time machine or a ‘way back’ machine. We only say it for very special dates in Rock and Roll history. This would be one of the top ‘things’ to go back to.
On Dec. 4, 1956, Elvis Presley paid a visit to the Sun Recording Studio with his then girlfriend, Marilyn Evans, a showgirl from Las Vegas. Elvis managed to interrupt a Carl Perkins session that had Jerry Lee Lewis playing piano.
Not long after Elvis arrived, fellow labelmate Johnny Cash also showed up. The four started an impromptu jam on a series of songs they all knew, which were mainly spirituals / gospel songs.
Studio owner Sam Phillips recorded the session. Eventually it would become known as the “Million Dollar Quartet” sessions.
But for some reason, the recordings didn’t get released to the public officially until the early Eighties.
So do you think we are right in thinking this would be one of the best events for our ‘way back’ machine, 61 years ago today?
