From the “oops” file.

It was on Dec 13, 1961 that The Beatles played 2 shows at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. They did a lunchtime show and a night show.

It was a pretty exciting night for the lads. Mike Smith, an A&R guy from Decca Records was coming to see them perform and to decide if Decca should offer them a record contract. He decided to record some song as part to the audition process. The Decca audition is the name given to the now-famous Beatles audition for the company at their studios in West Hampstead, north London, England, before they reached international stardom.

They told The Beatles that “guitar groups” were on the way out and did not offer them a contract. Decca signed The Tremeloes instead.

Decca’s decision to reject The Beatles is considered one of the biggest mistakes in music history.

We would have to agree.
