On Dec. 22, 2002, The Clash’s guitarist Joe Strummer passed away from a congenital heart defect. His real name was John Graham Mellor and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

Joe was an iconic figure of British punk. He developed a love of rock music listening to records by Little Richard and The Beach Boys as well as American folk-singer Woody Guthrie. Strummer would even go by the nickname “Woody” for a few years. Strummer would later say that “the reason he played music was the Beach Boys.”

RIP Joe.
