It was 35 years ago today that the music world lost Karen Carpenter. She and her brother, Richard, formed the 1970s duo The Carpenters. Although her skills as a drummer earned admiration from drumming luminaries and peers, she is best known for her vocal performances.

Even though The Carpenters sold millions of records, she still faced some difficult problems in her life. She recorded a solo album that was a little more sexy than what people were used to from her, but her record company decided not to release it and to charge them $400,000.00 for the recording costs. Karen got married and she really wanted to start a family. The guy she married, who already had an 18 year old daughter, never bothered to tell her he had had a vasectomy. The marriage soon fell apart.

Carpenter suffered from anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder which was little known at the time. She died at age 32 from heart failure caused by complications related to her illness. Carpenter’s death led to increased visibility and awareness of eating disorders.

She had the voice of an angel.

RIP Karen. Birds still appear….
