Did he or didn’t he?

On March 1, 1969, The Doors played a concert at Miami’s Coconut Grove Auditorium. During the show, Jim Morrison allegedly exposed himself to the crowd. The others on stage said he was no doubt drunk, disinterested, and verbally taunting the audience, but he never, as Ray Manzarek once said ‘whipped it out’. Morrison was arrested and later tried and sentenced to eight months of hard labor, a sentence his lawyers were appealing when Morrison died in 1971.

It is a pretty well known fact that the police used to try to find reasons to arrest the band (all bands for that matter, and especially in the South). It is generally thought these days that Jim was innocent of the major charge, which led to talk of a posthumous public vindication by Florida officials.

The things legends are made of, 49 years ago today.
