Today we are remembering Ronnie Montrose who left us 6 years ago today. Ronnie led the bands Montrose and Gamma and also performed and did session work with a variety of musicians, including Sammy Hagar, Herbie Hancock, Van Morrison, The Beau Brummels, Boz Scaggs, Beaver & Krause, Gary Wright, Tony Williams,The Neville Brothers, Dan Hartman, Marc Bonilla, Edgar Winter, and Johnny Winter. The first Montrose album was often cited as “America’s answer to Led Zeppelin” and Montrose the guitarist was often referred to as one of the most influential guitarists in American hard rock.

On March 3, 2012, Ronnie died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death was originally assumed to be the result of his prostate cancer returning. However, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office released a report which confirmed the guitarist had taken his own life. The toxicology reported a blood-alcohol level of 0.31 percent at the time of death. In early 2012, the deaths of his uncle and Lola (his beloved bulldog, whose companionship helped him cope with his cancer recovery) apparently worsened what Guitar Player described as “the clinical depression that plagued him since he was a toddler.” Ronnie was 64 years old.
