It was possibly the worst press conference in the history of Rock and Roll. On May 22, 1958, upon arriving at London’s Heathrow Airport before a tour of the UK, Jerry Lee Lewis shows the press his new bride — his 14-year-old (some reports say that Jerry said she was 15) third cousin, the former Myra Gale Brown, whom Lewis passes off as a year older.

Against the advice of his manager, Jerry took questions from the press. Jerry’s tour of the UK was one of the most anticipated tours of an American Rocker yet. The Daily Mail’s Paul Tanfield asked Gayle who she was and she replied “Jerry’s wife.”

The press later found out that Myra is actually his first cousin (once removed) and she still believed in Santa Claus.

Lewis’ upcoming 37-day tour is canceled after only three performances; the scandal follows him back home, effectively ruining his career at the time. (He did come back)

Understand that there are those who will explain that in those days, it was not uncommon for a 13 year old girl to get married in some parts of the country. Myra was Jerry’s third wife. The marriage was called into question because he was still married to his second wife. Jerry explained that his second marriage was ‘null and void’ because when he married wife #2, his divorce from wife #1 was finalized.

You almost need a scorecard to keep track.

Jerry Lee Lewis’s career took a bad turn, 60 years ago today.
