We are pretty sure that all of you musicians have heard the line “It will be good exposure for the band” when being asked to play for free. Sometimes, it can work.

On July 4 & 5, 1969, the first Atlanta Pop Festival was held. A band that was having a hard time getting record labels to even listen to them, played the first day of the festival. Their set was heard by a guy from Capitol Records who, after their performance couldn’t sign the band fast enough.

The band was Grand Funk Railroad.

49 years ago today, somebody listened. The band didn’t get paid that day, but….. Very smart move.

(We are not sure if this picture is from July 4th, 1969 in Atlanta, but it gives you the mental picture.)

When’s the last you listened to some Grand Funk?
