“Geezer” is a slang term for a man. It can carry either the connotation of age and eccentricity in the UK. In the US the term typically refers to a cranky old man. Originated in an area of Essex, Basildon. With that being said…..

Terence Michael Joseph Butler is celebrating his 69th birthday today. You will know him better as Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath.

Butler received the nickname “Geezer” at approximately age eight, because he “used to call everybody Geezer” at school. “It was just a slang term for a man. You know, like in America you say ‘guy’. In England, the term for that is either ‘bloke’ or ‘geezer’. I used to call everybody else geezer and then eventually everybody started calling me geezer.”

Ever wonder how Sabbath came together? Well, Butler formed his first band, Rare Breed, in the autumn of 1967, with John “Ozzy” Osbourne soon joining as lead vocalist. Then Butler started dating a girl who lived near Tony Iommi, and Iommi’s earliest memories of Butler involved seeing him walking past his house in Birmingham quite often to visit her. Later, Iommi and Butler became acquainted when their bands played at a nearby nightclub. And the rest is history.

Happy Birthday Geezer!!! You see, we didn’t call you an ‘old’ Geezer because you’re not!!!
