On July 21, 1971, Black Sabbath released their third album, “Master of Reality”. It is said that this LP laid the foundations of doom, stoner, and sludge metal. ‘Master of Reality’ was certified double platinum after having sold over 2 million copies.
For the recording of this album, guitarist Tony Iommi, who had injured his fingers in a factory accident years earlier, decided to downtune his guitar down three semi-tones (or one and a half steps to C-sharp). This reduced string tension, thus making the guitar easier for him to play. Geezer Butler also downtuned his bass guitar to match Iommi. The result was a noticeably “darker” or “sludgier” sound.
The picture we have here has the word “Sabbath” in a lighter color because the original vinyl jacket had “Sabbath” in raised letters in black. (Black wouldn’t have shown very well).
Was this your favorite album by Sabbath?
Happy 47th Birthday to “Master Of Reality”!!!
