VAN HALEN recently canceled the 31 North American tour dates it initially postponed in May.

Both singer David Lee Roth and guitarist Eddie Van Halen denied rumors that they were fighting again on the road, with fatigue and an over-ambitious schedule given as the reasons for curtailing the group's live work.

Eddie told USA Today in June that the band will resume touring in November with shows in Japan, adding, "In the New Year, we'll possibly do something special, but I can't talk about it."

Eddie also told Guitar World in a new interview that the band intends to stick around for a while, saying, "It feels more like a band and a family than it ever has . . . We're all very opinionated about things, but it's all for the benefit of the music."

The band has been supporting its new album, "A Different Kind Of Truth", VAN HALEN's first album in 14 years and first with Roth since 1984.

A four-minute video clip featuring highlights from this year's edition of the Wacken Open Air festival, which was held August 2-4 in Wacken, Germany, can be seen at this location.

DEEP PURPLE, NIGHTWISH, AMORPHIS, ARCH ENEMY, SABATON, DORO, ANTHRAX and SUBWAY TO SALLY are the first confirmed bands for next year's edition of Wacken Open Air, set to take place August 1-3, 2013. AMORPHIS will perform an acoustic set, while Doro will celebrate her 30th anniversary in the music business. More acts will be announced soon.

Wacken Open Air was first held in 1990 as a small event for local German bands. By 1998 the event had become the major festival on the European metal calendar and has included over 70 bands from all over Europe, North America and Australia.

Wacken Open Air is usually held at the beginning of August and lasts three days, during which the festival-goers camp on several large camping grounds surrounding the actual festival area. The 70 or more bands perform across four separate stages over the course of the event.

Wacken Open Air, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, was honored with a Live Entertainment Award in 2008 in the "Festival Of The Year" category. This award recognizes distinguished achievements in live entertainment and is given out by Live Entertainment Award (LEA) committee.

According to The Pulse Of Radio, two never-before-released songs from late ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley appear on the soundtrack of a new film. The movie, called "Grassroots", is based on the true story of two Seattle music journalists who tried to shake up the local political scene despite having no experience in it. It is not clear whether the two songs were recorded before or during Staley's time with ALICE IN CHAINS, or during the long, six-year period in which he virtually disappeared from public view until his death in 2002 from an overdose of drugs.

The titles of the songs have not been announced yet, nor whether they will be just heard in the film or on a soundtrack album.

The movie, due out June 22 in limited release, stars Jason Biggs and Joel David Moore as Seattle music journalists who both decide to run for office.

The film is based on the book "Zioncheck For President: A True Story Of Idealism And Madness In American Politics", which was written by the man Biggs is playing, Phil Campbell.

Meanwhile, some other Staley-related material may soon see the light of day as well: as previously reported, PEARL JAM guitarist Mike McCready is looking for singers to lay vocals down for some uncompleted tracks by MAD SEASON, the band he and Staley formed in the mid-'90s and recorded one album with.

ALICE IN CHAINS is also about to get to work recording the follow-up to its 2009 "comeback" album, "Black Gives Way To Blue". The new disc will be the second with William DuVall on vocals and guitar.

ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that artists like Staley didn't come around very often. "Layne was a very unique, one-of-a-kind guy," he said. "There's, like, a handful of those guys in music, for every generation, that are that unique and that hard to cop, but a lot of people try. [Laughs] But there's a lot of people that feel the weight of what that guy brought to music and have been influenced by it."

The 20th-anniversary reissue of PANTERA's "Vulgar Display Of Power" sold 9,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 48 on The Billboard 200 chart. This is more than double the first-week tally registered by the 20th-anniversary reissue of PANTERA's classic "Cowboys From Hell" LP, which debuted at No. 117 in September 2010 with sales of 4,200.

Upon its original release, "Vulgar Display Of Power" peaked at No. 44 on The Billboard 200 and spent a total of 77 weeks on the chart, the most weeks any PANTERA album spent on the list.

February 25 marked the 20-year anniversary for PANTERA's "Vulgar Display Of Power", a landmark album widely acknowledged as one of metal's most enduring and influential masterworks. Recorded by singer Philip Anselmo, guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, the album was certified double platinum by the RIAA and features several of the group's most iconic songs including "Walk", "Mouth For War", "This Love" and "Fucking Hostile".

To celebrate, Rhino channels the album's relentless blitzkrieg of musical aggression onto a two-disc Deluxe Edition. The CD includes the original album remastered and "Piss", a recently discovered unreleased track from the recording sessions. The DVD contains an unreleased live performance filmed in Italy in September of 1992 plus the three official music videos from the album.

Along with the unreleased song, "Vulgar Display Of Power (Deluxe Edition)" also features unreleased video of the quartet performing six songs at the Monsters Of Rock show in Reggio Emilia, Italy on September 12, 1992. The set list draws almost exclusively from "Vulgar" ("This Love", "Rise", "Mouth For War"), but also includes the title track from their previous album, "Cowboys From Hell", and a melding of "Vulgar"'s "Hollow" and "Cowboys"' "Domination", which was a live staple of the band. Video of PANTERA performing live during this era is extremely rare, making the DVD one of the few ways to see them in their prime.

"Vulgar Display Of Power (Deluxe Edition)" track listing:

CD

* "Mouth For War"
* "A New Level"
* "Walk"
* "Fucking Hostile"
* "This Love"
* "Rise"
* "No Good (Attack The Radical)"

GODSMACK's first-ever live album, "Live & Inspired", sold around 16,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 19 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Released on May 15 via Universal Republic Records, "Live & Inspired" features fierce and furious live renditions of numerous hits from the Massachusetts rockers' five studio albums. Their incendiary and infectious shows have become legendary in modern rock, and they continue to impress both critics and audiences alike every time they hit the stage. The group sounds unchained on rousing performances of "Awake", "Keep Away", "Straight Out of Line", "Whatever", "Voodoo", and "I Stand Alone".

This is the first time that's been captured on CD, and bonus tracks of covers that have "inspired" GODSMACK is also going to be included along with it. "Live & Inspired" track listing is as follows:

01. Straight Outta Line
02. Realign
03. Awake
04. Moon Baby
05. Changes
06. The Enemy

02. Come Together (THE BEATLES cover)

04. Nothing Else Matters (METALLICA cover)

About the collection, frontman Sully Erna reveals, "'Live & Inspired' is our way of saying 'Thank you' to all of our fans for believing in us throughout the years, and helping us to become a great live band! Along with this ass-whooping set live from Detroit Rock City, we've also included four cover songs of our favorite hits in the past to show you that, we too, are simply just fans that appreciate nothing more than good old fashion ass-kicking rock 'n' roll! Enjoy!"

Erna told Loudwire in a recent interview, "We were going to do a compilation with this song from Vegas, this song is from Chicago, this one is from Dallas, but I don't know, the more we listened to the Detroit show, the more we kind of figured out that it was a really good show for us."

Erna also said that GODSMACK has nothing but love for the Motor City, explaining, "It's always a great audience, as any rock band will tell you. Playing there is a special kind of fanbase that they have there, they live up to their reputation. They're a great rock audience."

In addition, the quartet encouraged its legion of supporters to be a part of the release. The collection's packaging actually showcases a variety of fan photos. Fans may submit live snapshots of the group on stage, pictures of themselves rocking out at GODSMACK concerts, or photos of their tattoos of the group's iconic logo on the band's official Facebook. Now, the winning photos adorn the album's booklet and packaging.

GODSMACK's fifth studio album, "The Oracle", opened with 117,000 copies back in May 2010 to land at No. 1.

Fan-filmed video footage of DOWN performing an impromptu cover version of the JUDAS PRIEST classic "Breaking The Law" at the opening show of DOWN's current mini-tour this past Friday, May 18 at The Station in Broussard, Lousiana can be seen below.

DOWN entered the studio last October to begin recording the first in a series of four EPs, to be released over the next few years (with a year between EPs), each touching on a different aspect of the band's sound.

The first six-song EP, which heralds the sound of DOWN going back to its roots, with influences from BLACK SABBATH, SAINT VITUS and WITCHFINDER GENERAL, will be released "late summer," according to guitarist Kirk Windstein. "[It's] kind of a throwback to what we were doing at the very beginning, on the 'Nola' record [DOWN's 1995 debut]," he said. "I think the fans are going to love it."

DOWN frontman Philip Anselmo recently described the band's new EP as "very stripped down. Nothing flashy. Straight to the point… really just DOWN music. If you liked the first record, the demos… something like that… This record, we're pretty dead straight and honest and on the money as far as making it as simple and direct as possible and I think we did that. . . It has that practice-room vibe to it. We didn't really try and fucking slick it out and anything. We went the more raw route, as far as an approach."for yourselves and you guys will be better judges than myself at this point."

The track listing for the effort is as follows (in no particular order):

01. Levitation
02. Witchtripper
03. The Misfortune Teller
04. The Curse Is A Lie
05. Open Coffins
06. This Work Is Timeless

Several months before his death, the late, great Ronnie Montrose contributed to hardcover coffee table photo book, "Eddie Van Halen", by legendary rock photographer Neil Zlozower.

The Van Halen News Desk has the exclusive on the guitarist's story of meeting Eddie Van Halen.

Montrose: "The first tour I did with VAN HALEN, the bill was JOURNEY, Ronnie Montrose, and VAN HALEN was opening. I was doing my instrumental music on that tour. VAN HALEN was a young, loud, and brash band, and I liked them. Eddie came up to me backstage at soundcheck and he called me 'Mr. Montrose.' He shyly shook my hand and said, 'Mr. Montrose, I'm Edward Van Halen, and I'm a big fan. We told Ted Templeman to get the MONTROSE sound when we did our record.' He also told me they used to play 'Dancin' Feet' from one of the MONTROSE albums at their yard parties in Pasadena.

"I really enjoyed Eddie's playing. What made Eddie special was his youthful irreverence for the rules. That's what impressed me. He'd developed his own style. I think Eddie started out on drums first, and there's a very percussive nature about the way he plays. He plays very metered and percussive, and he's very fluid in that style."
