Today we are remembering Lonnie Donegan who passed away 15 years ago today on Nov. 3, 2002.
Lonnie was a British skiffle musician, with more than 20 UK Top 30 hits to his name. He is known as the “King of Skiffle” and is often cited as a major influence on the generation of British musicians who became famous in the 1960s. The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles & Albums states Donegan was “Britain’s most successful and influential recording artist before The Beatles. He chalked up 24 successive Top 30 hits, and was the first UK male to score two U.S. Top 10s”.
Donegan’s influence on the generation of musicians that followed him is unquestioned. He inspired both John Lennon and The Who’s Pete Townshend to learn to play the guitar, and was responsible for hundreds of other skiffle groups being formed. One of them, The Quarrymen, later evolved into The Beatles.
Paul McCartney has said of Lonnie: “He was the first person we had heard of from Britain to get to the coveted #1 in the charts, and we studied his records avidly. We all bought guitars to be in a skiffle group. He was the man.”
RIP Lonnie. Thank You, and look what you started!
