Jimi Hendrix gave his first on stage performance on Feb. 20, 1959. Jimi was 16 years old, and was auditioning for an unnamed band. This happened in the basement of Temple De Hirsch, a synagogue in Seattle, Washington.

It didn’t go to well for Jimi as he was told not to return for the second set. The other members of the band thought he was a show-off because Hendrix did things like dropping to his knees, sticking out his tongue and flailing his arms. They also didn’t like his ‘wild playing style’.

We can not find anyone who has ever admitted to being in that band or making the decision.

Jimi Hendrix and his ‘wild’ guitar playing for the first time, 59 years ago today.

Here is a picture of the synagogue where it all happened. The building was torn down years ago.

Of course we got to ask, were any of you there that night?
