On April 25, 1990, the white Fender Stratocaster guitar that Jimi Hendrix used during his appearance at Woodstock sold for $334, 620 at Sotheby’s auction house in London, making it the most expensive guitar ever sold at the time.
After Woodstock, Jimi Hendrix continued to use the guitar for shows including at his final live performance at the Isle of Fehmarn in September of 1970. After that show, Jimi gave the guitar to drummer Mitch Mitchell.
Mitchell has said about it: “I had given him a drum kit as a present some time before and I said to him “I’ll have that guitar before you break it up” (I do not think that he would in fact have broken this particular guitar). He said, as was his way “You got it” and he then gave me the guitar. In retrospect I think it was by way of a gift as my daughter had just been born a few days previously.”
Mitch kept the guitar until fe decided to sell it at Sotheby’s in 1990. The guitar was sold to Gabriele Ansaloni for £198,000 ($334,620 US). Gabriele only owned the guitar for 2 years. That is when he sold it to Microsoft CEO Paul Allen for reportedly around $2,000,000.
Paul put the guitar in The Experience Music Project in Seattle, Washington, a Rock and Roll / Jimi Hendrix museum he put together.
Nice investment Mr. Ansaloni.
