On June 4, 1967, The Jimi Hendrix Experience played their last show in England, at London’s Saville Theatre, before heading off to America. The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album had just been released on June 1 and Paul McCartney and George Harrison were in attendance. Hendrix, who was already a great fan of the band, bought the album on the day of its release.

Hendrix chose to open the Saville show with his own rendition of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band“, rehearsed only minutes before taking the stage, much to Paul and George’s astonishment and delight.

Hendrix didn’t know at the time that they were in the audience. Paul McCartney said later he was honored by the tribute; “simply incredible, perhaps the best I have ever seen him play.”

Oh to have a ‘way back machine”. 51 years ago tonight. (We are not sure if this video was taken 51 years ago today, but It’s The Jimi Hendrix Experience playing Sgt. Pepper)
