The Beach Boys released their 2nd single “Surfin’ Safari” on Jun. 4, 1962. It was their first release on Capitol Records. The flip side was the song “409”. Capitol felt that “409” should be the ‘A’ side but a radio station in Phoenix started playing “Surfin’ Safari” instead. The record was a smash hit and largely in non-surfing cities like Dallas, Minneapolis, Buffalo and Hartford, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Tucson, Nashville, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Springfield MASS. The Billboard issue of July 14, 1962 cited Detroit as the major market of its national “break out”. Can’t you surf from Detroit to Canada? Or is it the other way around?
Happy 56th Birthday to “Surfin’ Safari”!!!!
