The Beatles arrived in Adelaide, Australia on June 12, 1964 to start their tour there. It is said that about 250,000 fans were there, well along the 10 mile ride from the airport to the hotel, to meet them. It was the biggest greeting that the Lads had ever got. Well for 3 of the Lads that is.
Earlier in the month, Ringo had collapsed at a photo shoot and was taken to the hospital to have his tonsils removed. A world tour was about to start and Ringo couldn’t make the start of it as he was told he needed to rest. Band manager Brian Epstein knew another drummer who had impressed him. His name was Jimmy Nicol, and he was hired to play the tour until Ringo could return. Jimmy played with them on some European dates, Hong Kong and onto Australia.
Here is a picture of Jimmy (sometimes Jimmie) with John, Paul and George. It wouldn’t last long but…. he played with The Beatles. (If you can’t pick him out…..)
54 years ago today. Any of our Australian friend see Jimmy with The Beatles?
