One of the things that we like to say is that the Late Karen Carpenter had the voice of an Angel. This is a great story about Karen and her brother,
The Hollywood Bowl held their annual ‘Battle of the Bands’ on June 24, 1966. The big prize, besides some trophies was a recording contract with RCA Records. There was also an album released with all the different winners.
One group won 3 trophies that night including ‘Combo Division’ and the biggie, the “Sweepstakes”. The winning act was called The Richard Carpenter Trio. The act / combo was Richard Carpenter on the piano, his sister Karen Carpenter on the drums and their friend Wes Jacobs on the bass and tuba. But RCA did not see a future in jazz tuba, and the contract was short-lived.
RCA Records is a very fine label with a great history. They did have a period where they didn’t have the best artist roster. There was a joke those days “What is the difference between RCA Records and the Titanic? The Titanic had a good band”.
If RCA would have worked with The Richard Carpenter Trio, they would have ended up with The Carpenters on their label.
This was 52 years ago tonight. And we can still hear her voice..
