Legendary and controversial comedian Lenny Bruce gave his last performances on the 24th and 25th of June, 1966 at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Also playing those shows were Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
The following is from the good Professor Poster: These performances by Lenny were not remembered fondly by Bill Graham, who described Bruce as “whacked out on amphetamines”; Graham thought that Bruce finished his set emotionally disturbed! It is said that Frank Zappa asked Bruce to sign his draft card that night, but the suspicious Bruce refused. NO surprise.
Later that same summer on August 3, 1966, a bearded Bruce was found dead in the bathroom of his Hollywood Hills home. The official photo, taken at the scene, showed Bruce lying naked on the floor, a syringe and burned bottle cap nearby, along with various other drug paraphernalia. According to legend a policeman at the scene said, “There is nothing sadder than an aging hipster” which itself was possibly one of Lenny Bruce’s own lines.
This is BG Fillmore number #13 in the old series was done by the legendary BIG five rock artist Wes Wilson and had an amazing four authorized printings, and one more un-authorized for good measure. The photograph on the poster was shot by Edmund Shea and is one of the most famous and best photographs of Lenny ever taken. The price of admission that night was just $2.50 at the door!! Interesting foot note, …Lenny Bruce is also pictured in the top row of the cover of the Beatles 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
