It became an American institution. One of the great parts of a generation and growing up in the USA.
On July 9, 1956, Dick Clark made his debut as host of Bandstand on Philadelphia TV station WFIL. He took over from Bob Horn, who had been charged with driving while intoxicated during a highly-publicized police crackdown.
The show’s name would be changed to American Bandstand when it went to ABC-TV in 1957. It taught teens new dance crazes, they got to hear new music and it became a lifestyle.
Dick Clark stayed with the show until 1989. The show stayed on the air for a while but it just wasn’t the same. ‘…It had the same beat but you couldn’t really dance to it…..’
It was 62 years ago today. How many of you watched American Bandstand religiously?
And, did you like it when Barry Manilow did the ‘new’ theme song?
