The loss of a parent is one of the most difficult things one will ever deal with in their life.
On July 15, 1958, after visiting her sister Mimi’s house (where her son John now lived), Julia Lennon walked down Menlove Avenue to catch the bus. She was hit by a car driven by an off-duty constable still learning to drive. She lost her life.
The officer was cleared of all charges which led Mimi to scream “Murderer!” at him. The 17-year-old John is so distraught at her funeral service that he laid his head on Mimi’s lap the entire time.
Lennon wrote several songs that are dedicated to or inspired by Julia, including “Julia,” “Mother,” and “My Mummy’s Dead.”
Ironically, the constable who hit Julia would later become a postman with a route that included Paul McCartney’s boyhood home.
