Gary Lewis of Gary Lewis and the Playboys fame is celebrating his 72nd birthday today. As you all know, (we think) Gary is the son of actor / comedian Jerry Lewis. When Gary was born, his mother had planned on naming him Cary, after actor Cary Grant, but the hospital screwed it up and he was ‘Gary’.

Gary and his band had a string of hits in the 60’s including “This Diamond Ring”, “Count Me In” which was the only non-British Commonwealth record in the Hot 100’s Top 10 on 8 May 1965), “Save Your Heart for Me”, “Everybody Loves A Clown”, “She’s Just My Style”, “Sure Gonna Miss Her”, and “Green Grass” .

Gary was Cash Box magazine’s 1965 “Male Vocalist of the Year.” Besides the Lovin’ Spoonful, the group was the only artist during the 1960s to have its first seven Hot 100 releases each reach that chart’s Top 10.

Gary’s music career was halted when he was drafted. When he left the service, music had changed a little and he was never able to return to his hit days.

Happy Birthday Gary!!!!!!! Now everyone, we know you have one of his songs in your head right now. Which one is it?
