And with the words “Well, you can all go pound salt up your ass, because come August 15, we’re going to have a festival!” Rock and Roll history was made.
We are not sure of the actual date, but sometime probably in July, 1969, a dairy farmer went before the local town board in Bethel, NY. After hearing a number of complaints about an upcoming concert that was going to happen on his farm, the farmer asked each official there if there were any legal stipulations, within their respective departments, that hadn’t been met to accommodate the festival that was expected to draw 40,000 people per day. When no reservations were raised, he addressed the entire meeting saying:
“So the only objection to having a festival here is to keep longhairs out of town? Well, you can all go pound salt up your ass, because come August 15, we’re going to have a festival!”
That dairy farmer was Max Yasgur and 49 years ago today there were a lot of people on their way to his farm.
