The Rolling Stones released their second EP (extended play) “Five by Five” on Aug. 14, 1964 in the UK. It was recorded at Chess Studios in Chicago a couple months earlier in June. The title of “Five by Five” was a play on words—five tracks recorded by the five members of the band.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were still honing their songwriting skills when this was recorded so only two songs on the EP were written by them, but credited to “Nanker Phelge”, a pseudonym for band-written compositions. The rest of the EP was composed of R&B covers from some of their favourite artists.

Five by Five reached #1 in the UK EP chart. Its five tracks and name would form the basis for their second US album, 12 X 5, later in 1964.

How many of you have this EP (on vinyl) in your collection?

Happy 54th Birthday to “5 X 5”!!!
