We are posting this at 2:00 Eastern time. It was at this time, 49 years ago today at Woodstock that Santana took the stage.
Here they are blazing through “Soul Sacrifice”. And according to Carlos Santana, they were “blazing”.
You also have to keep in mind that Santana didn’t even have a record out yet. Nobody at Woodstock knew who they were. But, concert promoter / manager Bill Graham managed to get them on the bill for Woodstock. He managed to do it by having Chicago play in San Francisco. Bill had a number of dates with Chicago, and by making them play elsewhere, the spot that they had at Woodstock became available. Needless to say, it worked out great for Santana. The guys in Chicago were pissed at Graham for years.
Santana drummer Michael Shrieve was only 20 year old when he played this show. He was one of the youngest performers at Woodstock.
