1967 was a great year for music. But did you know that only 5 artists / bands had #1 albums that year. One band was on top for a total of 30 weeks. Another, 15 weeks. Only one artist, Herb Alpert was only on top for one week and another, Bobbie Gentry, 2 weeks. The only other artists to have a #1 album that year was Diana Ross and The Supremes. Their "Greatest Hits" album became the #1 album in the US for 4 weeks on Oct. 28th of that year.
The artist who had the most weeks at #1 was The Monkees. They did it with 4 different albums. "The Monkees" (Jan.7 – Feb. 4), "More of The Monkees" (Feb 11 – June 10), "Headquaters (June 24) and "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones LTD (Dec. 2 – Dec. 30). The Beatles had the top LP for 15 weeks with "Sgt. Pepper.." (July 1 – Oct. 7). Herb Alpert's one week (June 17) was with his "Sounds Like" LP and of course Bobbie Gentry's two weeks were with her "Ode to Billie Joe" album (Oct. 14 & 21).
Only 8 albums hit the top of the charts that year. Only one Motown artist. How many of these #1 albums did you own?
The new #1 LP in the US 51 years ago today, "The Supremes Greatest Hits." And did it contain them!
