November 30, 1969: Simon & Garfunkel hosted their first and only television special, "Songs of America" on CBS.

The program was originally to be a "Bell Telephone" TV special but when they saw the finished product, with video images of John and Bobby Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King being shown while "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" played, the Bell Telephone executives commented, "They're all Democrats, why no Republicans?" Simon and Garfunkel replied, "Is that what you see? How about they were all assassinated?" Bell Telephone was also upset with scenes of the Vietnam War, so they pulled out of the project.

The duo met with CBS executives, who sympathized with the content and agreed to air the program anyway.
