Febrruary 1, 1954: Backed by his Jazz ensemble, Big Joe Turner recorded the original version of "Shake, Rattle and Roll" in New York City for Atlantic Records. Released in April 1954, it reached #1 on the Billboard R&B chart and peaked at #22, nearly at the same time, on the Billboard Pop chart.

Some of the original lyrics, which would have been considered highly sexual at the time, were changed when Bill Haley and His Comets recorded the song five months later.
