July 18, 1968: Working at the Abbey Road studios on the still un-named "White Album", The Beatles recorded Lennon's "Cry Baby Cry" and McCartney's "Helter Skelter." Paul would later say that he was inspired to write "Helter Skelter" after reading an interview with Pete Townshend, where the guitarist described his latest single, "I Can See for Miles", as the loudest, rawest, dirtiest song The Who had ever recorded. McCartney said he then wrote "Helter Skelter" "to be the most raucous" song that the Beatles ever recorded.
