July 2, 1956: One day after performing the Big Mama Thornton hit "Hound Dog" on the nationally televised Steve Allen Show, Elvis Presley recorded the song at the RCA studios in New York City. It was done in 31 takes, with Elvis himself producing the record.

Elvis also recorded "Don't Be Cruel"; this was Elvis'first session with the Jordanaires providing backing vocals. Both songs would be released as singles and both would go to #1 on the US charts.
