September 8, 1968: The Beatles made their first "live" appearance in over two years when they performed "Hey Jude" on the UK television show "Frost On Sunday" in front of an invited studio audience. The segment had actually been taped four days earlier at Twickenham Studios, along with Frost's introduction; the band played and sang over a pre-recorded backing track.
The song was the first single from the band's own Apple Records. This performance would propel the record to #1 in the UK. In America, he video would air on The Smother Brothers show, where the record would also hit #1 and stay there for 9 weeks, the longest run at the top of the American charts for any Beatles' single.
