March 7, 1966: Tina Turner recorded her vocals for the single “River Deep Mountain High.” Producer Phil Spector spent $22,000 on the song and considered it his best work ever, but when it was released by Ike & Tina Turner in May 1966, it flopped in the US and peaked at #88 on the Hot 100 chart. Although the record would go to #3 on the UK charts, Spector considered it a failure; he would withdraw from music for the next two years.
