July 3, 1965: The Yardbirds peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “For Your Love”. This was their first Top Ten single in the US and their highest charting single in this country. It peaked at #3 in the UK. Despite the single’s success, it signaled the departure of guitarist Eric Clapton, who played on the track with strong reluctance. He was dismayed with the band’s shift from R&B to pop and left The Yardbirds to join John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. He was replaced by Jeff Beck.
