July 9, 1958: Johnny Cash left Sun Records for Columbia Records. Although he was Sun’s most consistently best selling and prolific artist at that time, Cash felt constrained by his contract with the small label. Also, Sun’s owner Sam Phillips was focusing most of his attention and promotion on Jerry Lee Lewis. So Cash went to Columbia, where he would become a major star; he would stay with the label for over 25 years.
