MEGADETH played the song “Let There Be Shred” live for the first time last night (Wednesday, February 18) during the band’s concert at Prospera Place in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada as part of a Canadian tour with ANTHRAX and EXODUS. Fan-filmed video of the performance can be seen below.

“Let There Be Shred” is taken from MEGADETH‘s final, self-titled studio album which came out in January. The track sees MEGADETH leader Dave Mustaine reflect on how, “On the day I was born, a guitar in my hands / The earth started rumbling a thunderous command…”

Dave elaborated in a statement about “Let There Be Shred”: “When MEGADETH started, we said we would be fast and furious… we said so on the flyers we handed out. This song is fast and furious… It has a very hooky chorus that draws you in and you can’t help but play air guitar and headbang to this one.”

In an interview with Guitar World magazine, Mustaine said about “Let There Be Shred”: “Teemu [Mäntysaari, MEGADETH guitarist] is such an exceptional talent that he really lit a fire in me for my playing. We were joking around and constantly talking about how we have to make this record absolutely shred and that we needed to put a lot of solos in it. I think we accomplished that.

Smith originally wrote “Wasted Years” for MAIDEN‘s 1986 album “Somewhere In Time”. He told U.K.’s Total Guitar magazine about how the track came together: “I was messing around with a little four-track and I’d just put that riff down for ‘Wasted Years’. I was playing Steve [Harris, MAIDEN bassist] some other stuff and I played it to him by accident and he said, ‘What’s that?’ I said, ‘You probably won’t like this as it’s so commercial,’ but he really liked it and insisted we do it. So something you’d think he wouldn’t want to do, he does. But I do like to sit down and visualize us doing different things. Obviously, we can’t do anything too drastic, but whatever works, really.”

The exclusive, all-day immersive celebration also included an opportunity for fans hear the band’s new album a few days before its release, a seven-song MEGADETH electric set, a MEGADETH masterclass, a question-and-answer session with the band, guitar talk with MEGADETH leader Dave Mustaine and Gibson CEO César Gueikian, and much more.

Fan-filmed video of the acoustic and electric performances can be seen below.

Session Godfather, who uploaded the footage to YouTube, wrote about the acoustic set: “I was lucky to attend the ‘Let There Be Shred’ album launch event in La Vergne, TN. This is a short acoustic performance before Dave asked if we wanted to go next door for a surprise”, a reference to the electric set which wasn’t part of the official schedule for the event.

Illustrious metal collective METAL ALLEGIANCE, comprised of core members David Ellefson (MEGADETH),Mark Menghi (KING ULTRAMEGA),Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT) and Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER),performed last night (Thursday, January 22) at the House Of Blues in Anaheim, California. Joining the “core four” members at the gig were a number of guest musicians, including Chuck Billy (TESTAMENT),John Bush (ex-ANTHRAX, ARMORED SAINT),Doc Coyle (ex-BAD WOLVES, GOD FORBID),William DuVall (ALICE IN CHAINS),Jack Gibson (EXODUS),Gary Holt (SLAYER, EXODUS),Phil Demmel (KERRY KING, ex-MACHINE HEAD),Andreas Kisser (SEPULTURA),Alissa White-Gluz (ARCH ENEMY) and Troy Sanders (MASTODON). Among the tracks performed during the set were “Hangar 18” (MEGADETH),“Roots Bloody Roots” (SEPULTURA),“The Day I Tried To Live” (SOUNDGARDEN),“Whiplash” (METALLICA),“Fairies Wear Boots” (BLACK SABBATH),“Shock Me” (KISS) and “Crazy Train” (OZZY OSBOURNE). Fan-filmed video can be seen below.

Earlier this month, METAL ALLEGIANCE released a new single, “Black Horizon”, via Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM). The band’s first release of original music since 2018, the song features roaring opening riffs from guitarist Alex Skolnick (TESTAMENT) and vocalist William DuVall‘s (ALICE IN CHAINS) ominous howls, painting an apocalyptic scene. Mark Menghi (KING ULTRAMEGA) on bass and Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER) on drums keep the dread looming low in the sky, ready to explode with ferocity at any moment. Systems fail, shadows fall, and the doomed cry for salvation in this desolate world. Gloomy, minimalistic verses bookend thunderous choruses, chronicling a desperate flight for survival.
